William Steig (1907–2003) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and acclaimed author of children’s literature. Before becoming a beloved figure in children’s publishing, he was a celebrated cartoonist for The New Yorker, where he contributed thousands of witty and insightful drawings.

Steig began writing for children in the late 1960s and quickly became known for his ability to balance humor, heart, and imagination. His book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble won the Caldecott Medal in 1970, and titles like Doctor De Soto, Amos & Boris, and Abel’s Island received Newbery Honors.

Perhaps most famously, Steig wrote Shrek! (1990), the quirky fairy tale that inspired the blockbuster DreamWorks animated film franchise. His books continue to resonate with readers of all ages for their playful language, emotional depth, and memorable illustrations.

William Steig’s legacy as both a master cartoonist and an award-winning children’s author ensures his place as one of the most influential storytellers of the 20th century.
