Margaret Wise Brown

Margaret Wise Brown (1910–1952) was a pioneering American author whose poetic and gentle storytelling transformed children’s literature. Best known for beloved classics like “Goodnight Moon” (1947) and “The Runaway Bunny” (1942), Brown wrote more than 100 books during her career, creating timeless works that continue to resonate with readers of all ages.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Brown studied at Hollins College before attending the Bank Street College of Education, where she absorbed progressive educational theories that shaped her writing. She believed children’s books should reflect the real world and speak directly to young readers in a language they could understand. Her lyrical, rhythmic prose and comforting narratives captured the simplicity and wonder of childhood in a way that few authors had done before.

Brown’s stories often explored themes of security, love, and exploration. She collaborated with talented illustrators, including Clement Hurd, to bring her imaginative concepts to life.
