George Selden (1929–1989) was an American author of children’s literature, most famous for his classic book The Cricket in Times Square. Published in 1960, the story of Chester the cricket, Tucker the mouse, and Harry the cat captured the hearts of young readers and earned a Newbery Honor.

Following its success, Selden expanded Chester’s world with several sequels, including Tucker’s Countryside, Harry Cat’s Pet Puppy, and The Old Meadow. These stories are celebrated for their warmth, gentle humor, and exploration of friendship, loyalty, and belonging.
