Emily Haynes is an acclaimed Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist and keyboardist for the indie rock band Metric and for her work with the musical collective Broken Social Scene. Born on October 25, 1974, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Haynes grew up in a creative household—her father, Paul Haynes, was a well-known jazz writer and lyricist. This artistic environment played a significant role in shaping her musical sensibilities.

Haynes studied drama at Toronto’s Etobicoke School of the Arts and later attended Concordia University in Montreal. It was during this time that she met James Shaw, with whom she would go on to form Metric in 1998. Known for her dynamic stage presence and distinctive voice, Haynes quickly became an influential figure in the Canadian indie music scene. Metric’s music blends synth-pop, new wave, and rock, producing hits like Gimme Sympathy, Help I’m Alive, and Breathing Underwater.

Beyond her work with Metric, Haynes has contributed to Broken Social Scene, a collaborative indie collective known for its rotating lineup of talented musicians. She has also released solo work under the name Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, showcasing a more introspective and piano-driven style, notably on the album Knives Don’t Have Your Back (2006).

Haynes is widely recognized for her lyrical depth, often addressing themes of identity, technology, love, and social commentary. Her ability to fuse poignant lyrics with infectious melodies has earned her critical acclaim and a loyal fan base worldwide. Over the years, she has been nominated for and received several awards, including JUNO Awards, and continues to be a strong voice in alternative and indie music.

Today, Emily Haynes remains an influential artist, admired for her versatility, authenticity, and enduring impact on modern music.
