Aaron Starmer is an acclaimed American author known for his imaginative, emotionally resonant novels for both middle-grade and young adult readers. Born in northern California and raised in the suburbs of Syracuse, New York, Starmer earned his undergraduate degree from Drew University and later completed a graduate degree at New York University. Before focusing on fiction full-time, he worked in publishing and safari operations, which helped shape his adventurous and wide-ranging storytelling style.

He now lives in Vermont with his wife and two daughters, continuing to write novels that challenge, inspire, and entertain readers of all ages. Many of his books have received critical acclaim and have appeared on “best of the year” lists from institutions such as Time, The Wall Street Journal, School Library Journal, and the New York Public Library.

Starmer’s breakout works include The Only Ones, a genre-bending story about survival, individuality, and community, and The Riverman Trilogy, a middle-grade fantasy series that blends dark mystery with coming-of-age themes. Another major success is Spontaneous, a darkly comic young adult novel about spontaneous human combustion in a small town. The book was adapted into a feature film released by Paramount in 2020.

In his middle-grade novel A Million Views, Starmer explores the pressures and creativity behind viral video fame through a heartfelt story about friendship and ambition. His upcoming novel Night Swimming, set in the 1990s, centers around a group of teens who sneak into pools after dark, combining nostalgia, magic, and emotional exploration.

He also writes lighter chapter book series for younger readers, such as Locker 37 and Math Mysteries, which feature clever twists, humor, and problem-solving adventures.

Aaron Starmer is praised for his ability to balance the surreal with the sincere. His books are often filled with imaginative premises but grounded in emotional truth. Through layered characters, witty dialogue, and poignant storytelling, he invites young readers to reflect on identity, loss, creativity, and belonging.

In school visits and events, Starmer is known for his engaging presentations, encouraging students to embrace their creativity and to find joy in both writing and reading
