Robazzo is a Canadian multidisciplinary design studio and product brand founded in 2014 in Victoria, British Columbia, by architects Andrew Azzopardi and Christina (Tinka) Robev—its name combining “Rob” from Robev and “Azzo” from Azzopardi. The studio’s coaster products are a direct extension of its architectural, computational, and fabrication practice, most notably expressed through the West Coasters line of stackable wooden drink coasters crafted from locally sourced logs and salvaged West Coast driftwood.

Andrew Azzopardi and Tinka Robev met while studying at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and relocated from Ontario to Victoria in 2014, drawn by the city’s strong maker culture and access to natural materials. In 2015, they established Studio Robazzo in a Douglas Street warehouse, where they combined analog craftsmanship with parametric design, digital fabrication, branding, web development, interior installations, and experimental product design. This hybrid studio model—equal parts architecture lab and fabrication workshop—shaped Robazzo’s approach to functional objects.

The West Coasters line emerged organically as a side project, using wood offcuts and salvaged materials from the West Coast. Rather than treating coasters as decorative home accessories, Robazzo approached them as small-scale design artifacts. Each coaster featured precise laser-cut or CNC-routed geometry inspired by computational grids, topographic contours, and algorithmic layouts, contrasted against the organic grain of the wood. The coasters were designed to stack into sculptural arrangements, blurring the line between functional tableware and desktop art.

Material integrity played a central role in the coaster identity. Sustainably sourced local wood was selected for durability, stability, and visual character, with the natural grain intentionally left visible. The precise machine-cut patterns emphasized Robazzo’s signature balance of warmth and technical precision—an architectural sensibility translated into everyday use. Thickness, edge finishing, and surface texture were carefully considered to manage condensation, heat, and long-term wear, ensuring the coasters performed reliably while remaining visually striking.

Manufacturing was carried out in Canada using in-house digital fabrication tools, allowing Robazzo to produce coasters in small batches with tight quality control. This studio-led production model supported experimentation with form and pattern without committing to mass manufacturing, reinforcing Robazzo’s identity as design-driven rather than décor-driven. The West Coasters line proved highly successful, selling more than 120,000 sets locally and internationally through Christmas markets, design shops, and online channels.

By the late 2010s—around 2018 to 2020—Robazzo gradually wound down large-scale coaster production to refocus on higher-tech and research-oriented projects. The studio earned recognition along the way, including the Douglas 10 to Watch Award (2017) and a shortlist placement for the Lexus Design Awards (2020), and contributed creative work to initiatives such as Victoria Fashion Week launches. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Robazzo pivoted again, founding Puzzle Lab, a sub-brand producing algorithm-driven, laser-cut wooden jigsaw puzzles that apply the same computational logic and material sensitivity as the earlier coaster designs.

Robazzo as a coaster brand represents the convergence of architecture, digital fabrication, and sustainable material use. The West Coasters line stands as a defining chapter in the studio’s history—demonstrating how contemporary design thinking can elevate a simple household object into a durable, sculptural product rooted in Canadian craftsmanship and West Coast identity.
