Kiku Hughes

Kiku Hughes is a Japanese American (Yonsei) cartoonist and illustrator based in the Seattle area. Her debut graphic novel, Displacement (2020), is a semi-autobiographical work that blends historical fiction with science fiction. In the novel, the protagonist, also named Kiku, is transported back in time to a World War II-era Japanese American internment camp, experiencing firsthand the injustices faced by her grandmother's generation. The book has been recognized with an APALA Literature Award honor and was nominated for an Eisner Award.

Beyond Displacement, Hughes has contributed to various anthologies, including Beyond Anthology volumes 1 and 2, Short Box #6, and Alloy Anthology. Her work often explores themes of identity, queer romance, and speculative fiction. She has also written and illustrated the short comic "Origami," featured in Team Avatar Tales, set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Hughes's storytelling is characterized by its emotional depth and commitment to representing underrepresented voices. Through her work, she aims to uplift and empower marginalized communities, allowing readers to see themselves reflected in narratives that are often overlooked.

Currently, Hughes resides in the Seattle area, continuing her work as a freelance artist and writer. She remains active in the comics community, contributing to various projects and engaging with readers through social media and public appearances.
