Esther van den Berg (born in 1982) is a Dutch illustrator and author residing in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, where she lives with her partner, their two daughters, and their cat. She trained in illustration and printmaking at the Artez School of Arts in Kampen, where her early work explored etchings, linocuts, and monotypes via traditional printing presses.
After working briefly as a designer in the Randstad region, Esther felt the pull of illustration again and launched her creative career under the name “Puikeprent.” Though she now primarily illustrates digitally, her handcrafted printmaking roots remain evident in her digital pieces, which often display textured brushstroke-like finishes and a cozy, hand-painted aesthetic.
Van den Berg is best known for her charming picture books, including her popular World of Worm series (Colors, Shapes) and First Day of School! Her work is celebrated for conveying everyday experiences and emotional growth through whimsical animal characters and vivid yet soft color palettes.
Her storytelling frequently draws from personal experiences—childhood memories, her role as a parent, and her love of nature and animals—to build imaginative worlds where children see reflections of their own emotions and journeys. Known for attention to detail and gentle humor, her illustrations feel warm and inviting, making them ideal for young readers encountering themes like starting school or learning shapes and colors.
Notable titles include:
– A tender depiction of a child’s emotions, routines, and surprises on the first school day, praised by educators and readers alike.
and Shapes – Fun, interactive baby books designed to teach basic concepts through playful visuals and seek-and-find prompts.
Esther continues to balance freelance illustration for editorials, educational material, and picture books under Puikeprent. She also explores ceramics, translating her illustrative creativity into sculptural form. Her art remains rooted in warmth, simplicity, and story, always offering a playful wink and an emotional connection.
