Ellie Peterson is an award-winning author and illustrator of picture books that combine emotional insight with science, humor, and creativity. Based in the Seattle area, Ellie draws inspiration from her background as a middle school science teacher and her upbringing as a biracial military child. Her work reflects a passion for both education and storytelling, making complex ideas accessible and engaging for young readers.

Before becoming a full-time author and illustrator, Ellie spent over 20 years teaching middle school science. That experience continues to influence her books, many of which explore STEM topics in playful and relatable ways. Her stories often feature curious, thoughtful characters and illustrations that encourage kids to think critically about the world around them.

One of her best-known books, How to Hug a Pufferfish, addresses the importance of personal boundaries with warmth and humor, and it received the Washington State Picture Book Award. Other notable titles include It’s a Round, Round World!, which introduces scientific concepts in a fun, visual way, and School Is Wherever I Am, a book inspired by the flexible learning environments of the pandemic that celebrates curiosity and discovery in everyday life. In Sandcastles Are Forever, Ellie explores themes of friendship and loss, drawing on her own experiences growing up in a military family.

Beyond her books, Ellie is committed to building community through literacy and art. She frequently visits schools to share her creative process with students and inspire a love for reading and drawing. She also serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion coordinator for the Western Washington chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

Ellie Peterson’s work stands out for its thoughtful storytelling, engaging illustrations, and its ability to connect with children on both intellectual and emotional levels.
