Crum grew up on a dairy farm in close proximity to a maximum-security prison, a unique setting that fostered her early interest in dark, tense storytelling. Before pivoting to full-time fiction writing, she spent years living in Los Angeles working in various roles within the film industry. She eventually went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing.
