Alice Schertle is a beloved American poet, author, and educator, best known for her contributions to children’s literature. Born in 1941 in Los Angeles, California, Schertle studied at the University of Southern California and later at UCLA, where she was mentored by renowned children’s poetry teacher Myra Cohn Livingston. Before fully dedicating herself to writing, she worked as an elementary school teacher, an experience that deeply influenced her understanding of young readers and their imaginative worlds.

Schertle has authored over 40 children’s books, often celebrating nature, animals, and the joys of language. Her writing is characterized by playful rhymes, engaging rhythms, and accessible storytelling that captivates early readers. Some of her notable standalone titles include Very Hairy Bear, Button Up!, and All You Need for a Snowman. Her poetry and stories encourage children to explore the world around them with curiosity and delight.

Perhaps Schertle’s most famous work is the Little Blue Truck series, co-created with illustrator Jill McElmurry. The first book, Little Blue Truck (2008), became an instant favorite, charming readers with its rhythmic text, fun sound effects, and heartwarming tale of friendship and kindness. The series expanded with titles such as Little Blue Truck Leads the Way, Little Blue Truck’s Christmas, and Good Night, Little Blue Truck, blending humor, community values, and memorable characters. After McElmurry’s passing in 2017, subsequent books have honored her artistic legacy, maintaining the distinct illustration style beloved by fans.

Alice Schertle currently lives in Plainfield, Massachusetts. Her dedication to poetry and children’s literature has earned her a respected place among contemporary authors. Through her lyrical storytelling and passion for teaching, she continues to inspire children to find joy in words, nature, and friendship.
