Suncoat first entered the beauty market in 2002, when our founder and chemist Yingchun Liu, Ying for short, who has a background in both polymer chemistry and organic chemistry, faced a quandary: her seven-year-old daughter wanted to experiment with nail polish. Ying, on the other hand, felt that the plethora of hazardous chemicals in nail polish, such as formaldehyde, toluene, and acetates, posed too great a risk to her health. So, using her chemistry expertise as well as her artistic eye for creativity, Ying created a revolutionary new formula of water-based, non-toxic nail polish, designed to provide the same quality and finish as conventional nail polish, but without any harmful chemicals. On a roll, Ying expanded Suncoat to include a collection of award-winning formulations for the face, eyes, lips, and even hair, all resulting from the ideal combination of technology and effective natural ingredients. The model is at the heart of the Suncoat brand, with a firm commitment to producing innovative, high-quality products from nature's best ingredients while maintaining the highest environmental integrity.
Ying earned a BSc in polymer chemistry from Nanjing University in Nanjing, China, and an MSc in organic chemistry from The University of Calgary in Calgary, Canada. Ying was also a Ph.D. candidate in organic/biopolymer chemistry at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada, from 1993 to 1995. Ying worked in Canada for many years as a Formulation Chemist, Senior Coatings Chemist, and Technical Director for industrial coatings before founding Suncoat in 2002.
