Why You Should Use Natural Makeup

makeup-brushes-natural-rose-petal-compressor.jpgSafety is a growing and important concern when determining what makeup to use. Your health is affected by everything you put into and on your body – including makeup that stays on your skin for hours. Your skin is an organ that absorbs the compounds that lies on its surface – whether it is natural ingredients or toxins. The skin acts like a barrier to foreign products, but it only keeps a portion of the toxins out, absorbing some into your bloodstream. Minimizing your exposure to toxins is the most effective way to protect yourself and one way to do that is using natural makeup.

What chemicals are in makeup?

Count the number of skincare products that you use. Some people can expose their skin to up to ten different skincare products on a daily basis. The number increases for special events when you use
more makeup. It’s scary when trying to determine your exposure to harmful chemicals, as almost 20% of all personal care products include one chemical linked to cancer [1]. Here are only a few dangerous chemicals that are prevalent in cosmetics:

  • Paraben is one of the most commonly used preservatives in cosmetics, present in almost all products, and can disrupt the endocrine system and lead to many other health issues.
  • BHA/BHT are ingredients used to lighten skin and can cause stomach cancer, liver damage, thyroid issues, and reproductive problems.
  • Phthalates are often found in fragrances but can cause damage to reproductive systems, block testosterone and increase the risk of breast cancer.
  • Coal Tar is still used in hair dyes and dandruff shampoos, even when recognized as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
  • Formaldehyde is released by some preservatives and can cause damage to the brain, stunts growth and development, and can trigger allergic reactions.
  • Mercury is well-known as a poison, but is still used in some beauty products to lighten skin.

This list is by no means exhaustive, as these six chemicals are only a small part of thousands used in your makeup. In fact only about 10% of the chemicals included in makeup have available safety data, so you are putting a lot of trust in cosmetic companies [1]. The FDA does not approve the ingredients in personal care products and generally hold very little power over what makeup companies can use in their products. The FDA can take action on a cosmetic product, but they require reliable scientific information, which may take years of research. That’s a very compelling reason to try some of these natural brands.
