Should Women Drink Protein?


Whether you should or should not drink protein is a surprisingly common question amongst many women. There is one simple answer: YES! Protein is not reserved for people who are aiming to be fitness models or gym enthusiasts. Young to old, male or female you should be making an effort to consume more protein.

The benefits of drinking protein are plentiful, not to mention that protein helps women achieve a variety of health goals like losing weight, building mass, and increasing energy levels. 

Losing Weight

Protein helps you lose weight in two ways:

  • By helping build muscle
  • By suppressing your appetite

By having a higher muscle mass, your body will be more efficient at burning fat. What’s the result? A more lean you!

Protein also has the ability to make you feel fuller, for longer by suppressing your appetite.  Your gut sends signals to the brain indicating that you are hungry or that you are full. When you consume protein, the gut sends a signal to the brain that stimulates the release of glucose, resulting in less of a desire to eat – or feeling fuller for longer. This will help you stop eating when you are bored, and ensure that you eat when your body is truly hungry.

Building Mass

Are you the type of girl who wants to increase her muscle mass? Well you will have a hard time doing so without consuming enough protein.  Naturally, it is too difficult for women to achieve a “bodybuilder” look. Women’s bodies do not have enough of the hormones necessary to achieve this look. Contrary to popular belief, protein will not result in a “shredded” look in woman. This isn’t to say that protein will not help women build muscle – it definitely will. But, unlike men, consuming protein will result in a leaner and more toned body. You won’t look like a bodybuilder by consuming protein. That look is built over years with hardwork, dedication to intense workouts, and a very strict diet. 


You should start your day off with a high protein meal or at the very least a protein breakfast smoothie. Protein helps your body regulate blood sugar, which means less sugar-crashes and long lasting energy throughout the day. Because protein gives you lasting energy throughout the day, don’t assume that this means your body doesn’t require other nutrients, like carbs and fats – because it does! Your body’s first source of energy comes from burning the energy that comes from carbohydrates and fats. Protein is saved for helping your body repair muscle tissue, injuries, and even hair, skin, and nails. When your diet does not include enough carbohydrates and fats, your body will use protein for energy, but this is a last resort. Energy is provided by preventing sugar crashes.

Necessary Nutrients

There are amino acids that your body needs to function, but cannot make it on its own, known as essential amino acids. What provides these amino acids? You guessed it – protein! Without consuming protein products, our bodies would not be able to function optimally.

In order to ensure that your body is getting enough proteins in order to make essential nutrients, eat foods high in protein, like:

  • Steak
  • Chicken Breast
  • Turkey Breast
  • Tuna
  • Bison
  • Eggs
  • Avocado
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Tofu
  • Legumes
  • Nuts
  • Quinoa
