Prenatal Vitamins Before Pregnancy.
For those of you who are planning a baby, it’s never too early to start that insurance policy. Now, before you head off on a search for financial insurance – I am referring to the daily insurance policy that comes in pill form. One we like to refer to as a prenatal supplement or prenatal vitamin.
Much like your daily multivitamin, these supplements, taken daily before or during pregnancy can ensure that your body is provided the nutrients you need for the adventure you’re in for.
The benefits of prenatal vitamins.
There are, what seem to be, an endless choice of prenatals available. Thorne Research Basic Prenatal is a complete dietary supplement for pregnant and lactating women. Which prenatal vitamins are best before pregnancy?
Several nutrients have been found to benefit pregnant women who suffer from “morning sickness,” including vitamin C, vitamin B6, and vitamin K. Folic acid supplementation is recommended for all women of childbearing age because the biggest need is during the first trimester, when a woman may not even be aware she is pregnant. High-potency multivitamins may sometimes be difficult for a woman to “stomach,” particularly during the first trimester of pregnancy. Often overlooked, Vitamin K2 is often never heard of until a mother has her first child and the nurse comes in to give a Vitamin K injection. Vitamin K2 works by regulating the body’s metabolism of calcium, helping to guide calcium towards the areas of the body where it is needed, such as your skeleton and bones, and away from areas where it could have a negative effect, such as the arteries and cardiovascular system.
Is vitamin K2 safe during pregnancy?
K2 supplementation has been shown to improve bone health for expecting mothers and to reduce the risk of bone-related pain. Research has indicated that K2 is particularly important during pregnancy for both mother and child. K2 deficiency during pregnancy can be harmful to the unborn child during the development of the child’s skeletal system. This continues once the child is born if the levels of vitamin K are low in breast milk.
In extreme cases, lower vitamin K levels during pregnancy can result in pregnancy-associated osteoporosis. This causes severe pain and at times, vertebral fractures. The situation can be improved by K2 supplementation. Controlled studies done in Japan showed that women who were given 20 mg of K2 for about a week prior to giving birth, had more K2 in their blood compared to women who did not supplement their intake. K2 levels were elevated in umbilical cord blood which indicated increased transfer between mother and child. As a result, none of the K2-treated mothers showed signs of vitamin K deficiency at birth, compared to 90% of the newborns whose mothers were not given K2 supplementation. When to stop prenatal vitamins.
You might be surprised to learn that, prenatal vitamins can still be important postpartum. Ideally, you began taking them several months before conception and can continue taking prenatal vitamins after the birth of your baby. It has been suggested to keep taking a prenatal vitamin for as long as you are breastfeeding.
When is the best time to take prenatal vitamins?
You know popping those daily pills is important for your—and baby’s—health, but when during the day or night should you take them? Well, your body isn’t quite your own for the next 40 weeks – so the honest answer is, take them whatever time of day you’ll best remember to take them. You may find that taking your supplement in the morning makes you feel nauseous, if this is the case, try taking it a little later during a meal. Things to avoid during pregnancy.
Letting go of some habits can be tough, but it’s best for you and it’s definitely best for baby. Ditch those bad habits, if only for 40 weeks – you’ll be glad you made these sacrifices:
1. BUTT out (this should be obvious)
The most serious complications of smoking during pregnancy – including stillbirth, premature delivery, and low birth weight – can be linked to nicotine and carbon monoxide (the two main cigarette ingredients). These toxins work together to reduce your baby’s supply of oxygen. So if you want your baby to thrive in utero, butt out that ciggie.
2. Pass on that wine
Because alcohol crosses the placenta, any alcohol you consume is absorbed through your bloodstream and reaches your foetus within 20 minutes. It’s poisonous and toxic to your baby and it may affect any of his or her organs – with the brain being the most vulnerable.
3. Choose foods wisely
If it’s raw don’t eat it (unless it’s fresh fruit or veggies and then wash them well beforehand). Uncooked seafood (sushi) and rare or undercooked beef (jerky) or chicken should be avoided because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, such as salmonella, or contracting toxoplasmosis. Deli meats and unpasteurized foods (for example, soft cheeses such as Camembert and Brie cheese) have also been known to be contaminated with listeria – a genus of bacteria that can cause miscarriage and has the ability to cross the placenta, potentially infecting your baby and leading to infection or blood poisoning.
